A TWO-STAGE MODEL OF THE DEMAND FOR SPECIALTY CROP INSURANCE AgEcon
Knox, Lyle; Richards, Timothy J..
Legislators are considering raising catastrophic (CAT 50% coverage) crop insurance premiums. However, estimates of a two-stage coverage-choice and participation model using county-level data from California grape growers show that the demand for CAT insurance is price-elastic, therefore, premium increases will worsen the financial performance of the grape-insurance program.

An Evaluation of Factors Affecting the Choice of Coastal Recreational Activities AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Caffey, Rex H.; Devkota, Nirmala.
A visitor’s decision to use a particular recreational site is influenced by the individual’s taste as well as the characteristics of the site. For this reason, improved knowledge of the visitors’ interests and factors influencing their choices are vital for both planning and policy formulations in coastal development. This study examines visitor characteristics and desired site specific characteristics in order to determine the factors affecting use of the Louisiana coast for specific recreational purposes. We use a multinomial logit model and internet survey data to evaluate the factors affecting individuals’ decisions to visit coastal Louisiana for a specific use. Results suggest that the major variables affecting the choice of coastal recreational...

This study intends to verify which variables affect the financial leverage of Brazilian agribusiness companies, considering the migration in the indebtedness ranges as proposed in the model of Matarazzo (1998). 26 companies were selected in accordance to the following links of the agribusiness chain flow: a) agricultural production; b) input supplying; and c) processing and distribution. The study was conducted using a multinomial logit model, based on annual data from 1999 to 2005. The results indicate that the variables tangibility of assets, growth opportunities, size and profitability were statistically significant in the explanation of the debt structure of Brazilian agribusiness companies.

ANALIZING WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE IMPACTS USING A MULTINOMIAL LOGIT LAND USE MODEL AgEcon
Fezzi, Carlo; Bateman, Ian J.; Day, Brett H.; Posen, Paulette; Rigby, Dan.
We develop a two-stage, multinomial logit model of UK land use to investigate the impact of policy changes upon agriculture. The model utilizes a large panel database covering the entirety of England and Wales for 14 years between 1969 and 2004 integrated with the economic and physical environment determinants of all major agricultural land use types. Our model performs well in out-of-sample prediction of current land use and we use it to assess a proposed implementation of the Water Framework Directive via a tax on fertilizer. Results indicate that such policy change would generate substantial switching from arable to grassland systems, reducing significantly the amount of nitrate leaching into UK water-bodies.

Assessing the Returns from Organic Marketing Channels AgEcon
Park, Timothy A..
Organic farmers face heightened pressure in developing a portfolio of different marketing channels and in bargaining competitively with increasingly sophisticated marketing participants in the supply chain for organic products. This research assists producers by identifying specific farm and demographic factors that enhance earnings given the choice of marketing outlet. The two significant selectivity coefficients confirm that organic earnings when marketing through a single outlet are biased upward since farmers who are better suited to market through multiple outlets have already moved away from this marketing strategy. An accurate evaluation of the projected earnings from any marketing strategy must account for selectivity effects.

Bayesian estimation of non-stationary Markov models combining micro and macro data AgEcon
Storm, Hugo; Heckelei, Thomas.
In this poster a Bayesian estimation framework for a non-stationary Markov model is developed for situations where sample data with observed transition between classes (micro data) and aggregate population shares (macro data) are available. Posterior distributions on transition probabilities are derived based on a micro based prior and a macro based Likelihood function thereby consistently combining previously separated approaches. Monte Carlo simulations for ordered and unordered Markov states show how observed micro transitions improve precision of posterior knowledge as the sample size increases.

Beef Labeling After BSE: Do Consumers Care about BSE Testing and GMO Labeling? Evidence from Canada and the US AgEcon
Steiner, Bodo E.; Yang, Jun.
Following the May 2003 Canadian BSE case, food safety issues have become even more prominent to policymakers and consumers. In both Canada and the US, governments and industry have responded with a variety of quality assurance, traceability and labeling schemes. However, there is little information available on the extent to which consumer perceptions differ regionally across North America towards labeling schemes. This paper attempts to fill this gap, by providing results on a variety of beef labeling strategies from choice experiments that were conducted in Alberta (Canada) and Montana (US). The analysis focuses on consumers' perceptions towards negative voluntary labeling with regard to BSE testing, genetically modified organisms (GMO) and the use of...

Cereal supplies in rural families of the Senegalese Groundnut Basin. Who is responsible for meeting family food needs ? AgEcon
Sakho-Jimbira, Maam Suwadu; Benoit-Cattin, Michel.
In the traditional operation of production-consumption groups in rural areas of Senegal, the group chief, or Borom njël, has a social duty to make sure family food needs are met. His ability to do this is supported by certain social rules governing these groups, and by a favourable environment. However, various changes have now adversely affected the environment. These changes prompted us to assess the Borom njel's current ability to go on playing his social rule as a food provider. From data collected in two villages of the Senegalese Groundnut Basin, using multivariate analysis, we identified three production-consumption group profiles according to how the Borom njel ensured main cereal supplies: (i) market purchase with migrants' remittances; (ii) home...

Comparison of Perception of Risk and Willingness to Consume GM Foods AgEcon
Wachenheim, Cheryl J.; Nganje, William E.; Lesch, William C..
The dichotomy between perceptions of the acceptability of risk associated with genetically modified (GM) foods and willingness to consume GM foods is investigated. Results indicate that some consumers are willing to consume GM foods even though they may perceive such foods as somewhat unsafe, with determinants such as self-perceived knowledge about the availability of GM foods and altruistic motives having positive and significant impacts on their consumption decision. Efforts towards decreasing perceptions of risk and ultimately increasing acceptance of, and demand for, GM foods should address issues related to their altruistic characteristics and outrage.

Cooperative Mergers and Acquisitions: The Role of Capital Constraints AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Manfredo, Mark R..
Several explanations for merger activity exist for publicly traded firms, but none consider the unique aspects of cooperatives. This study develops a test for the hypothesis that cooperative consolidation occurs primarily in response to capital constraints associated with a lack of access to external equity capital. An empirical model estimates the shadow value of long-term investment capital within a multinomial logit model of transaction choice in a panel data set of the 100 largest U.S. cooperatives. The results substantially confirm the capital-constraint hypothesis. Thus, the primary implication is that internal growth may be a more viable alternative to consolidation if new forms of cooperative financing are developed.

EXPLAINING THE CLIMATE-DEPENDENT DISTRIBUTION OF CROPS IN SPACE –THE EXAMPLE OF CORN AND CORN-COB-MIX IN BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG AgEcon
Lippert, Christian; Chatzopoulos, Thomas; Schmidtner, Eva; Aurbacher, Joachim.
This article analyses the current climate-dependent spatial distribution of corn and corn-cob-mix in Baden-Württemberg using 2007 data at the county and community level. We use OLS and spatial econometric models to estimate the effects of different climate and non-climate variables on the share of grain maize in UAA. Whereas the temperature effect is missed by means of OLS regression, the adequate spatial error model at the county level yields a highly significant positive effect of mean annual temperature. Additionally, it displays a temperature cut-off point after which corn share is less likely to rise due to temperature increase. These effects are supported by a non-spatial multinomial logit model at the community level. The latter further indicates...

Factors Affecting the Impact of CAP Scenarios on Farm Structure: An Analysis Based on Stated Intentions AgEcon
Bartolini, Fabio; Viaggi, Davide.
Several authors have emphasised the effect of agricultural policy (such as SFP) as a driver of structural change. This paper aims to identify the determinants of the change in the use of productive factors under different policy scenarios. The analysis is performed ex ante, assessing the effect of CAP abolishment (as compared to the current CAP) on the use of productive factors, based on stated intentions by farmers. The results highlight the role of farm size, intensity and education in determining different patterns of reaction to policy changes. Also differences are identified among the three main component of structural change, land, capital and labour, with the latter being the less dependent upon the CAP.

FACTORS INFLUENCING TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION IN A LOUISIANA AQUACULTURE SYSTEM AgEcon
Caffey, Rex H.; Kazmierczak, Richard F., Jr..
A multinomial logit model was estimated and used to analyze the impact of various producer characteristics on the adoption of flow-through and recirculating technology in soft-shelled crab production. Because of the industry's geographic isolation and high turnover rate, data was collected by personal interviews in 1991. The results suggest that increased adoption might be fostered by targeting education programs towards full time, family operated businesses in nontraditional production regions. However, development of effective education programs may be hindered by the lack of a significant relationship between producer adoption decisions and the information provided by university or extension personnel.

Farm Operator Benefits from Direct Marketing Strategies: How Does Local Food Impact Farm Financial Performance? AgEcon
Park, Timothy A.; Mishra, Ashok K.; Wozniak, Shawn J..
In the era of a global economy, farmers face increasing pressure in developing a portfolio of various marketing channels. However, the literature on direct marketing strategies has mainly focused on consumers. Using farm-level data this study investigates factors associated with the choice of three direct marketing strategies. We apply a selectivity based approach for the multinomial logit model to assess the relationship between the choice of direct sales marketing strategy on the financial performance of the business. Findings from this study suggest that obtaining an Internet connection and accessing the Internet for farm commerce increases the likelihood of using intermediated marketing outlets. Using the Internet for farm commerce and operating...

Farmer strategies to face labor shortages in Chilean agriculture Ciência Rural
Aguirre,Verónica; Echeverría,Rodrigo; Olmedo,Clara; Blanco,Gustavo.
This study analyzes the strategies that farmers in the south of Chile use to face current labor shortages and identify the variables that determine each of these strategies. A multinomial logit model and odds ratios plots with predicted probabilities were applied to a sample of 384 farmers. Interviews and focus groups were applied to specific producers, professionals and public officials. The main results show that only 32.3% of farmers declared that labor shortage is a problem. Of this percentage 52% chose the strategy of paying better, 13.8% chose improve the workers' working conditions, 9.5% chose to mechanize, and 24.1% did not follow a strategy. The production of labor-intensive products (e.g., exportable fruit) determines the strategy of paying...

Farmers' Perceptions about Spatial Yield Variability and Precision Farming Technology Adoption: An Empirical Study of Cotton Production in 12 Southeastern States AgEcon
Kotsiri, Sofia; Rejesus, Roderick M.; Marra, Michele C.; Velandia, Margarita M..
This paper examines how cotton farmers' perceptions about their spatial yield variability influence their decision to adopt precision farming technologies. Utilizing cross-section survey data from 12 Southeastern states and a two-step econometric modeling approach, we find that farmers who perceive their yields as more spatially heterogeneous will more likely use site specific information gathering technologies and apply their inputs at a variable rate. In addition, our empirical analysis shows that perceptions about future profitability and importance of precision farming, along with socio-economic factors, also drive the technology adoption decision. These results have implications for producers contemplating the variable rate management decisions, as...

Farming and the Internet: Reasons for Non-Use AgEcon
Briggeman, Brian C.; Whitacre, Brian E..
Rural broadband infrastructure and service has received a significant amount of funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. These funds should increase broadband availability, but will broadband be used in rural areas and in particular by farmers? This paper uses Agricultural Resource Management Survey data to investigate why the majority of U.S. farmers choose not to use the Internet in their farm business. Although frequently cited by policymakers, concerns about inadequate Internet service or security actually account for a small percentage of responses. This research identifies targeted educational programs that focus on alleviating perceived barriers to Internet use.

FSA Direct Farm Loan Program Graduation Rates and Reasons for Exiting AgEcon
Dixon, Bruce L.; Ahrendsen, Bruce L.; Nwoha, Ogbonnaya John; Hamm, Sandra J.; Danforth, Diana M..
Farm Service Agency (FSA) direct loans are intended to provide transitory credit to creditworthy borrowers unable to obtain conventional credit at reasonable terms. Farm loan program (FLP) effectiveness is measured in part by how readily direct loan borrowers graduate to conventional credit. A survey of FSA borrowers originating direct loans during fiscal years 1994-1996 is used to estimate graduation rates. A majority of 1994-1996 loan originators did exit the direct FLP by November 2004. A multinomial logit model indicates financial strength at origination resulted in greater likelihood of farming without direct loans approximately 9 years after loan origination.
